about

‘Glum’ is an inadvertent conceptual masterpiece, a ramble through the tumbleweeds of the mind touching on love, loss, belief and fulfilment. It’s an attitudinal thought provoker, a heady, life-affirming adventure (as all Giant Sand albums are).

With Howe Gelb at the helm, ‘Glum’ is a rollercoaster ride that touches highs and lows; there’s spine tingling peaks and troughs embedded in the music. It does everything that you hope that music could still do… it’s way beyond simple songs.

Indeed, this is more than just an album, it’s an emotional and uplifting family affair featuring the band’s classic line up of Howe Gelb along with John Convertino, Joey Burns, Paula Jean Brown with Rainer, Victoria Williams, Lisa Germano, Chris Cacavas & Pappy Allen (from Pappy & Harriets Pioneertown Palace).

“A blend of rock, folk, and country with some high-octane, gloriously dissonant twists.” All Music
“While the guitars still squall and roar, they're used more sparingly, erupting to devastating effect in gloomy, low-key songs.” The Quietus

Originally released 25 years ago, it’s a timeless trek that’s enhanced with a classic KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic session that spreads the myth of ‘Glum’ yet further (and there’s an additional five tracks that add further polish proceedings). The session is slow paced, drawling, a further exploration of the options, taking in gospel and Vegas jazz, while Howe explains all… comes clean.

“It’s music that lives and breathes” exclaimed Morning becomes Eclectic host Chris Douridas.
Indeed it is.
